Here's the results of your Plant Research.
@Teakepp It seems like the shrub might be in the genus Sarcobatus, also known as greasewood or saltbush. You take a closer look at other specimens around the area, observing Sarcobatus in several stages of its life cycle. You note the way windblown sand, dust, organic debris, and plastic trash alike all seem to build up amongst the lower of their thorny branches, so that they seem to be growing out of little mounds of sand between expanses of bare, slightly lower ground. Their branches seem almost to weave themselves together and you imagine with some effort and a lot of scratches you could dig a few up and weave them into a low fence that could slow the wind and accumulate soil over time.
