Ghadames in Libya, is an ancient Berber town, known as the Pearl of the Desert. It stands in an oasis in the Sahara, and has been inhabited since the 4th millenium BC, where it has been an important base in the trans-Saharan trade route.
Buildings are made from mud, lime, and palm trunks, and covered alleyways provide shelter from the summer heat. A fine example of desert urbanism, many of its buildings have been continually inhabited and improved for thousands of years.
