It's hardcoded as inline style in gallery App code. Find the line with
bg.svg
and comment it out. (gallery.php line 214)
full scale perhaps can be achieved also, but instead dirty fixes there should be switch in settings added and style moved to css and code pushed up.
But I do not know how css styling of addons is meant to be done. I can try to put it into my global css style and see if it works.

I've run in to the same issue when posting png images. However, I discovered that if I first put some text in the post before posting the png, then the png is scaled properly without the grid background. . Maybe putting some text first sets up the css styling to use paragraph rules which then get applied to the png? Just posting the png image first doesn't seem to have any css rules/styling applied.

I think even just posting an initial blank line / carriage return will do the trick for getting rid of the grid background and having the png scaled properly .

You can define the content height with the "Max height of content (in pixels)" setting.
