2023 Jindřich Chalupecký Award exhibition closing Sat. 24.2.2024 Ostrava
Jonas Staal. | Propaganda Station Propaganda Station aims to make visible the various contemporary propagandas that actively shape our world today. The central installation is designed as an inversed panopticon: instead of surveilling the visitor, it provides the viewer a position of counter-surveillance over the work of propagandists that influence our everyday life. The presentation of the laureates of the 2023 Jindřich Chalupecký Award (JCHA) and the associated exhibition Propaganda Station by Dutch artist Jonas Staal are on view at PLATO Bauhaus only until Sunday, 25 February. The exhibition closing will take place a day earlier and will offer guided tours with the exhibiting artists and the curatorial team, a lecture on the restoration of forest ecosystems, a workshop for children, and the final session of the Propaganda School, this time on the topics of media ecology with Michal Klodner from the National Film Archive and climate (counter)propaganda with Michal Feller from the DUHA movement.

Program of the exhibition closing:
✦ 14:00–16:00 ✦ Propaganda School
In the middle of Propaganda Station, Jonas Staal’s exhibition as the foreign guest of this year’s Jindřich Chalupecký Award, lies the Propaganda School. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, this platform has hosted meetings with groups of experts, activists, and organizers with the goal of jointly analyzing the tools and forms of contemporary propaganda as well as experimenting and educating ourselves in methods of (counter)propaganda. Following a session on media propaganda and disinformation and a second on the topic of anti-Roma propaganda and forms of resistance to it, the final session will address the relationship between propaganda and climate from the perspective of media ecology and ecology of the mind.
✦ 14:00 ✦ Michal Klodner: Media ecology and ecology of the mind
The battle of interests and facts. The emotional, social, and media conditioning of information. How is collective consensus created and, conversely, made impossible? The algorithmic multiplication of enemies and burnout. Professional influencers and experts, digital rights and regulations. Influence and non-influence, post-media strategies. The countryside as an inspiration for cities, the experience of the city in the countryside. Media literacy, media imagination, and connections with nature. Forest spas, safe spaces of the mind and the practice of finding solutions.
Michal Klodner is a researcher, activist, and head of the Digital Curation Department at the National Film Archive.
✦ 15:00 ✦ Michal Feller: Black-green
A talk about (anti-)climate propaganda and more, particularly in the context of local events. Using real examples that map different forms of activism, we will go through its diverse development and concrete examples of what forms of propaganda and counterpropaganda local actors have used and are using. How did the PR departments of multinational corporations manage to deal with it? How does the fight against climate change relate to the right to housing? And how does all of this fit into the wider climate movement? We hope to discuss all these things and, in doing so, journey together from the first demonstrations for clean air all the way to the Camp for Climate Action.
Michal Feller works in the Ostrava branch of the DUHA movement.
✦ 14:00–17:15 ✦ Workshop for children
✦ 16:30–17:15 ✦ Tomáš Salov: The Great Fire in Bohemian Switzerland
A previously uncommon element is slowly creeping into the Central European landscape: wildfires. In 2022, the largest forest fire in the history of the Czech Republic occurred in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. How will nature manage to cope with such an event? And how will humans?
Tomáš Salov is a spokesman for the Administration of the Bohemian Switzerland National Park.
The program is accompanied by an installation by the StonyTellers collective entitled Burnout Space.
✦ 17:30–18:15 ✦ Guided tour of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2023 exhibition
The tour will be led by the exhibiting artists and the curatorial team.
