New server - node9 will be powered up by Raspberry Pi 5. On its journey through internet time node9 had several phases, starting as 1U server hosted in small datacenter, then professional datacenter, plugged in cultural organization as shadow IT equipment. In 2020 it was migrated to single Rpi 4 and soon took form of several other cheap SBCs including field research Rpi 3 with camera. This winter an old Rpi B+ with Enviro HAT is being tested in
lab.node9 running on solar power and battery with mobile data connection. This takes about
2.5W and
4.5W with idle Odroid N2+. After making sure the solar power and battery sustain more consecutive cloudy winter days, that should turn to stable hosting site in forest environment.
For news from lab.node9 connect to @
waterlily tea - you will find also more about Senzor Saikei, #
permacomputing server/datacenter research model from last year. Arduino MKR1000 with wifi AP was connected to soil sensors and water circuit in garden, sonifying moisture levels and watering plants.
So there is some path from Pi B+, used in several installations to Pi 5 8GB RAM with NVME SSD. For sure the energy limits of SBCs are needed in our climate reality while base node9 takes
15 - 20W. But also we are in the media situation which requires infrastructure built for public values and commons, reliable, accessible and welcoming for contemporary requirements.
Spent some time testing and the comparison looks as follows: current Rpi4 with USB3 attached SSD gets score of
246 in single core performance,
601 in multi-core Geekbench and
7000 in storage pibenchmarks. This can still run Hubzilla and Streams instances of citizen run social media, PHP websites in Docker with HAProxy and mail system. There are two more SBCs with another things like Nextcloud with Onlyoffice, Peertube or Manifold Scholar. Pi 5 with NUMA tweaks and PCIexGen3 NVME SSD Samsung 980 gets
903 in single core and
2158 in multicore Geekbench and
50198 score in storage pibenchmarks. Quite some speedup. SSD
measurements of the drive show 0.5W idle - 4.5W peak, 3W average under IO load. Even when 5 takes more energy, the efficiency and responsiveness could be worth it and additional power in urban area not covered by solar energy will be reduced hosting more in the forest.
So stay with node9, ask about your digital needs, or look about power requirements of other providers and make a choice for living on this planet. Because scientific fact is not only climate warming exists, but also there is urgent need to do something. So why not have blazing fast and ultra low power futuristic hosting without toxic manipulation right now? Find more at node9 blog on sustainability, technology and environment @
