Woody Vasulka Multicast Lecture and Screening Session, March, 2005.
Media:multiple VIC video and RAT audio clients (Mac OSX and Linux) Mbone (Multicast Backbone) German Research Network port for ZKM Digital and DV audio-/video content sources. Live multiple video streaming.
Description: With the aim of researching the facilitation of international educational cooperation with, in 2005 with Woody Vasulka and the MARCEL EU academic network, Philip Pocock directed the ZKM high-speed Internet 2 Multicast node (con10t). With Woody Vasulka, they participated in experiments in media-rich distant learning environments. Whereas most participants register with the Access Grid to connect, ZKM assured its maximum privacy by connecting with the open source components underlying the Access Grid (VIC for video and RAT for audio) and obtained from the German DFN research network direct access to the high speed Internet 2 Mbone (Multicast Backbone).
Collaborative multimedia intercontinental performance activity among students was enabled binding Multicasting clients to the open source multimedia software Pure Data. Students were able to 'occupy' the same video node by over-layering sections of their source video streams. Visual motion sensing 'read' and transcode multicast teaching and presenter gestures and visual data, affording accompanying 'soundscape' soundtracks.
Philip Pocock and Woody Vasulka conducted Multicast session over a period of many months at ZKM, while Steina and Woody were artists in residence 2005.
Highlights were the presentations of Woody Vasulka and Steina concerning early computer and video art performance and experimentation at the Kitchen New York, as well as, Dr. Miller Puckette, creator of the graphical audio and multimdeia software Max and Pure Data, in multicast interview and presentation from Paris with ZKM and MARCEL art and technology network members.
